Why your cat prefers to drink from the faucet or the toilet

Pourquoi votre chat préfère boire au robinet ou dans les toilettes

Have you caught your cat drinking from the tap, or worse, the toilet bowl? Rest assured, this behavior is much more common than you might think, and it is easily explained.

An instinct linked to moving water

Cats are naturally attracted to moving water. In the wild, stagnant water can signal a risk of contamination, while moving water is perceived as fresher and safer. A running faucet or toilet bowl water (which is frequently refreshed) checks all these boxes for your cat.

Why not just their bowl?

Several reasons may lead a cat to shun their bowl in favor of other water sources:

  • The water in the bowl stagnates and loses freshness over the hours
  • The bowl is placed too close to their food or litter box
  • The container is too narrow and bothers the cat's whiskers
  • Tap or toilet water is simply more interesting to watch and drink

Is it dangerous for my cat to drink from the toilet?

It is not ideal in terms of hygiene, especially if cleaning products are regularly used in the bowl. It is therefore better to redirect this behavior rather than let it become a habit.

How to redirect this behavior

  • Keep the toilet lid closed to limit access
  • Change the bowl water more often, ideally morning and evening
  • Move the bowl away from the food and litter box
  • Offer a water fountain, which reproduces the moving water effect your cat seeks, without the drawbacks of leaving a tap running

In summary

This behavior is not a whim: it responds to a very real instinct linked to moving water. By understanding this preference, it becomes easier to address it with a suitable solution at home.
